CSA Z150.3-17 Safety code on articulating boom cranes.
4 Design, construction, and installation
4.1 Design
4.1.1 Design requirements
Cranes shall, as a minimum, meet the applicable requirements of EN 13001. Design requirements for special design booms (non-production models) or special hoist conditions may be further determined by either the crane manufacturer or an engineer.
4.1.2 Engine exhaust gases
Engine exhaust shall be piped and discharged to protect the operator from noxious and temperature effects. Exhaust pipes shall be guarded or insulated to prevent contact by and injury to the operator when performing normal duties.
4.1.3 Hydraulic systems
Hydraulic systems shall meet the following requirements:
a) Exposed lines subject to damage shall be protected, where practical.
b) Means shall be provided for checking the manufacturer’s specified pressure settings in each
hydraulic circuit.
c) All hydraulic components normally rated according to bursting strength, such as hose, tubing, and
fittings, shall have a minimum bursting strength of at least three times the operating pressure for
which the system is designed.
4.1.4 Lubrication
All moving contact surfaces that bear a load and require periodic lubrication shall be provided with a means of applying the lubricant. Lubricating points should be accessible without removing guards or other parts.
4.2 Load ratings
4.2.1 General
The ability to lift a load may be governed by crane stability or structural competence.
Note: The actual load that can be safely raised or lowered is influenced by such additional factors as freely suspended loads, wind or ground conditions, condition of rail track, rubber tires condition and inflation, and tread width, boom lengths, proper operating speeds for existing conditions, and, in general, competent operation.
4.2.2 Ratings governed by crane stability
4.2.2.1
To ensure stability, in some areas of operating range, the capacity of the truck crane configuration may be reduced.
The margin of stability is established by taking a percentage of the minimum load that produces a condition of instability (with booms at stipulated working radius and at stipulated slewing angle). This percentage shall not exceed the percentages shown in Table 1.
